Seesar is percussionist Will Connor’s H. P. Lovecraft-focused, dark ambient solo project. Connor is a London-based percussionist (relocated from Honolulu, Hawai`i) devoted to experimenting and composing using unconventional and traditional instruments and techniques. He rethinks how to generate percussive and acoustic sounds with a goal of reversing the aural expectations of the instruments, attempting to create electronic sounds with acoustic devices, et cetera, Connor plays drones and sustained tones along with truncated, abrupt sounds. He freely draws upon Italian Futurism and Dadaist sensibilities to create textural soundscapes and industrial sonic explorations, performing on household objects and homemade devices, including pot lids, grill hoods, sheet metal, springs, shelf brackets, and bicycles, as well as traditional and ethnic percussion. Performing and recording as Seesar, Connor draws heavily from his deep appreciation for literature thematically associated with the Cthulhu Mythos. Connor feels that given Lovecraft’s and Italian Futurist composers’ parallel reactions to modernism, one incorporating cosmic doom while the other embracing machination and deflowering of human nature, Connor’s approach to music making using metallic objects and sounds to generate dark soundscapes is reflective of the collective mentality of his greatest influences. Connor holds degrees in acoustics, music, and ethnomusicology and recently completed his Ph.D. at Royal Holloway, University of London, involving a research project on Medieval-style musical instrument construction and Goth music studies.
